Andrew Wyeth, Ben Shahn, Miroslav Sasek, and Richard Bunkall
What inspires you? Could you explain your creative process?
Illustration: My influences include Andrew Wyeth, Ben Shahn, Miroslav Sasek, and Richard Bunkall. Peanuts is also an important part of my world. Right now I love W.G. Sebald’s books, and certain movies like Tarkovsky’s The Mirror and Kore-Eda’s After Life are very important to me. My mundane, everyday life is always a source of simple things to inspire me.
My process is fluid by rigid discipline. I make myself work, but I never really know what’s going on. I can start with an image, and torture it to something completely different halfway to finish. I can work weeks on a character to get little done, and finesse a whole landscape in thirty minutes. Specifically I start with an inspiration, direction, or a memory, make shapes (usually in photoshop), and play/edit until something emerges. All the colors, textures, and drawing come last and happen much faster. Most of the time-line of work is spent on waiting for something of interest.
